Kelptyn's behavior and blood counts have shown some good improvements over the past several days. So we were able to bring Kelptyn home from the hospital again this past Friday night (Day +25). It's so true what "they" say...Home is where the Heart is. Our Love is home and we couldn't be more excited about it. We continue to be grateful and thankful each day for Kelptyn's donor, nurses, doctors, support staff, family, and friends who make every effort on Kelptyn's behalf. His road to healing continues to be full of ups and downs, but for now we can enjoy the simple pleasures of home while following up with doctors twice a week at the hospital clinic. Kelptyn just cut another tooth yesterday and is enjoying lots of cuddles as he continues to deal with medication side effects (constipation, insomnia, roid rage). Despite the challenges our little man faces, we are so blessed to have him home with us and the whole family under one roof at night. :)

Well, it's official Day +13 marked Kelptyn's engraftment. His WBC count was around 6,000 today so if he holds on to his high numbers tomorrow he won't need his "miracle grow" drug to help him for a bit. This is good news since the drug makes his bones mass produce the donor cells which makes his bones ache quite a bit. The aches have been keeping him up at night, but he seems to settle to sleep with Mommy or Daddy sharing the couch with him. It's been about a week since he could sleep in his crib comfortably by himself. He is doing really well otherwise and now we will hope that these cells take up a permanent home forever. The doctors will be slowly changing all his medications from IV form to oral form over the course of the next week. So hopefully if all goes well Kelptyn will get to go home sometime next week. Thank you for your continued prayers, support, and love sent our way. We are very pleased with his progress and remain optimistic about his journey that's yet to come.
"I believe.
I believe in mind over matter. I believe in the human spirit to prevail. I believe in miracles and blessings, both great and small. I believe in possibilities. I believe that hurdles in life are meant to be jumped over, not as something to stop us." I believe in Kelptyn Jack. He gets knocked down again and again, but he continues to rebound stronger each time. He has a small body with a tall spirit and he continues to teach all of us. The past nine days have been better than the first time around in terms of the transplant and chemo side effects. However, the doctors changed some medications around because Kelptyn had some severe brain swelling on Monday, but it seems to be well controlled now with medication. We think this was occurring for some time post transplant #1 and it just took the doctors awhile to figure it out. Kelptyn is truly one of a kind and a mysterious little man at times. Kelptyn is just starting to lose his hair again, but hopefully now it will just be minor changes day-by-day until he engrafts the donor cells. So day-by-day we wait, but every day we are grateful. |
