Chemotherapy has definitely let us experience some new things together like:
*wearing gloves with EVERY diaper change, no baby wipes, just sterile water (must be changed every 24 hours) and use only gause pads
*placing cotton balls in his diaper to collect pee samples
*weighing each and every diaper on a scale
*morning & evening weigh ins with abdominal measurements
*nightly laundry to get the chemo and poop out of his clothes
*oral sponge lollipops every 2 hours during the day to clean out the mouth and prevent mouth sores
*Kelptyn had his first popsicle while one of his 30 minute drugs was infusing (prevents mouth sores), he actually liked the ice chips better
*His 4th chemo drug came with 48 hours of treatment, linen changes & baths with sterile water every 6 hours around the clock
*Being in isolation in our hospital room unless they clean it once a day...then KJ has to wear a mask and we play in the BMT playroom by ourselves (which also gets cleaned between patients, I guess you could say everyone is germ-aphobic around here, these kids are at such a HIGH risk)
So now he has two days of rest before he receives the donor's marrow. Well, if you can call it rest with all the vital checks and other medications he continues to take to slow down the progression of Osteopetrosis. Kelptyn really seems to enjoy all the special attention, lollipops, hospital staff visits, and just being with his Mama & Dada. Truly a Happy Star!
